Enriched Language Arts

On November 16, 2010, Mrs. Renkly’s Enriched Language Arts class attended the Writers in the Middle Conference in Lamoni, Iowa, at Graceland University. Its purpose was to enhance the writing skills of young writers. Some of the sessions that students could attend were; Concrete Poetry, Writing Secrets, Digital Story Writing, Authors chairs, Sing it Out, Writing Session with Gordon Korman, and more.

After riding in the car for three hours, Kenzie Goshorn, Cati Davis, Haley Koch, Sam Wilwerding, Sarah Goedken, Megan Owens, Addy Kaster, Emma Hochfelder, Zoe Swinten, Mrs. Renkly, and Ms. Gray, attended an opening welcome and then dispersed into their chosen writing sessions. After lunch, they went to one more writing session, and then to a college auditorium to listen to a long-time published author Gordon Korman. There he talked about what he does when he gets writer’s block and how he goes about writing adventure stories. Gordon also discussed the books he has written with the audience including the book he wrote when he was in seventh grade. A book that Gordon wrote was, Liar, Liar Pants on Fire and it was also translated into French, so it read, Teller of Untruths, Your Trousers Have Combusted.

The seventh graders took back with them writing secrets to make their writing better, advice from a published author on writing adventure stories, how to write a song, radio broadcast, poetry, recording data, associated with science, how to write hieroglyphics, and stories not only written by them, but many other students.

I personally think that this trip sounded really, really fun!!!!

Kovember

You are all probably wondering, “What is Kovember?” Kovember is actually just like Movember, but, in Harlan it was renamed after Mr. Kohorst. Kovember is to honor men and support and bring awareness to men’s health, specifically cancer, such as prostate and testicular.

NHS (National Honor Society) and HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) are hosting Kovember activities from November 7-December 7, including the girls and boys Blue Out basketball games. All proceeds through our Kovember activities, Blue Out, and other funds earmarked through the American Cancer Society for men’s cancer.
Growing mustaches and beards are part of the Kovember celebration. Many male students in the high school and adults have been growing beards and mustaches for Kovember. Teachers that are participating have their students donate money towards cancer.
Men have 1 out of 2 chances developing some form of cancer, where women have a 1 out of 3 chance.
So all of you men, get out there and grow a beard, to raise awareness!

HCMS Scholastic Book Fair

On Friday, October 22, 2010, the Scholastic Book Fair began and will continue until Monday, November 1.

“The book fair is an opportunity for students and teachers to buy and enjoy books, as well as purchase school equipment,” said Ms. Gray, who hosts the book fair in the Middle School library. Ms Gray also said that the profit made goes to buying other books for our library.

There are plenty of items for everyone to choose from such as books, posters, journals, jewelry, and a variety of school supplies. Some of the school supplies include pencils, pens, bookmarks, highlighters, and even Hershey smelling calculators.

The book fair is an awesome place to find the series and authors you are looking for. Some series are Twilight by Stephenie Myer, The Clique by Lisi Harrison, and Lightning Thief by Kathryn Lasky. Sarah Dessen is another great author that people love.

You should consider reading the books that are from Scholastic because they are grand time passers. So make sure you always attend Scholastic Book Fairs!

Child Abuse

Have you ever heard of child abuse? You probably have but most of the time when you think of child abuse is physical abuse but there are other kinds like sexual abuse, emotional abuse, and neglect.

Physical abuse happens when a person responsible for a child or adolescent welfare cause physical injury or harm to a child some examples are hitting you with something, kicking you, burning you, punching you, threatening you with or attacking you with weapons, and twisting of your arms or legs. Basically physical abuse is when people adults or a person a few years older then you bodily harm.

Sexual abuse plainly means any kind of sexual contact that occurs between you and an adult or a much older teen that’s taking care of you.
Emotional abuse is when parents or care taker “Have caused or could cause serious behavioral, cognitive, emotional or mental disorders. Examples of emotional abuse is how they talk or act towards you, behaviors, ranging from severe punishment like locking you in a room or more common behaviors like blaming you, putting you down, threatening you or other family members or pets or just making you feel bad.

Neglect is when someone supposed to take care of you but doesn’t. Examples of neglect are failure to provide you basic needs, and can be physical, educational, or emotional.

We went and talk to a family about what their abuse was like. They wish to stay anonymous these are the questions we asked. What type of Abuse did or are having did someone inflict on you? If it’s not to painful what do you say your abuse is/or was like? Who is this person that inflicted this pain and suffering on you? Do you see this man now and is he still inflicting this pain on you What would you say caused or is causing this person to inflict this pain on you? If you don’t mind reveling how old you where when/is happening How do you think this has changed your life and please explain what it was like having or had this pain inflicted on you? “My abuse was Molestation or sexual abuse. I don’t exactly remember what it was like but I remember always being scared of him. It was my biological father. No Fortney for my sister and me we don’t see him at all anymore and thanks to my mom we no longer live with him. I’m not sure why he would do that to mw but I feel it was just for his own pleasure when he was high or drunk. 3 or 4 years old I think it has made me mentally stronger in saying that if I can get through that I can get through that I can get through anything. Also I was lucky to have family support me when it all came out, I love them with everything.” This person’s sister has the same questions and here are her answers. “I had physical mental and sexual abuse. My physical abuse was very painful I actually have two scares one on my hand from when I was stab and the other from when he shot me the mental abuse made me have much less self esteem. Like my sister it was my biological father who did all these terrible things to me. I think what caused him to do all those things was the drugs and the alcohol. I was 1-3 years old when it all happened. I think that it has made me a stronger person mental and physically.”
The facts are that approximately 1,200 children and teens in the U.S. died as a result of abuse or neglect 44% of those deaths were from neglect, 51% from physical abuse and 5% from a combination of neglect and physical abuse. In 2000, Child Protective Services (CPS) responded to three million reports of child abuse involving 5,000,000 children and teens many of those reports where “substantiated” which means authorities proved that some kind of abuse or neglect occurred.
Experts estimate that 12% to 25% of girls and 8% to 10% of boys are sexually abused by the age of 18. To be child abuse the abuser has to be an adult or a few years older than you. 51% of abuse were white, 25% of abuse where African Americans, 15% where American Indian/Alaska natives, and 9% were Asian/Pacific islander.
The ways you can know you are being abused is when the abuser is touching you in a way that fills wrong, injured or physically hurt you, made you feel worthless, left you alone to care for yourself for an extended period of time without someone to care for you.
As a kid you have the right to be respected, to say no when someone touches you where you don’t want to be touched, to tell someone if you feel you have been abused or neglected, to be provided for, to receive and education, to receive medical care, to refuse sexual advances, not to be called names, to report any kind of maltreatment, not to be neglected, to be protected from any harmful situations, and most importantly not to be abused physically emotionally or sexually and to develop to be your best.

A Snowy Week

By: Maddie Keast and Jess Schaben

What comes to your mind when I say A Snowy Week? Many of you probably think of a week full of snow, or a bunch of little kids throwing snow balls. But when you ask people in Harlan, Iowa what they think they think of a book, written and illustrated by Ellen Frances Keast. Many of you are thinking wow what’s so great about writing a book people do it all the time, but this Author/Illustrator is only 11 years old! She wrote this amazing book when she was only 7 years old! It took her a good three years to find an agent and then a good year till it was finally published!

Ellen is also writing two more books in her series! A Rainy Week and A Sunny Week. A very reliable source told me that they will contain the same characters from the first book! Right now Ellen is currently working on her second book!

We had a chance to sit down with the Author and ask her a few questions!

Middle School News: What inspired you to write a book at the age of 7?

Ellen: I was frustrated with the weather at the time. It was spring and we were still getting snow, and I hate the snow. I was ready for the warm weather. So I sat down and did what I love to do. Write.

Middle School News: Can you tell us a little about your book?

Ellen: Its about a girl who has a dream and she wakes up and it comes true. Its for children who are just beginning to read.

Middle School News: We have heard you are coming out with two more books! Can you tell us a little bit about these books?

Ellen: The next book is called A Rainy Week, and the one after that is A Sunny Week. A Rainy Week is about when we go to Okoboji Iowa and it rains. The book is about going to the lake and not being able to do all the fun stuff you had planned on because it’s raining. A Sunny Week is about a trip to Hawaii. I like to write about things that I know and my life experiences.

Middle School News: What are some of the steps you had to go through to get your book published?

Ellen: Getting an agent was the first step and I had several. Then the agent goes to work to find a publisher. We had to get a lot of “no’s” before we found the right publisher. Then the publishing process begins. We have editing and after the book was edited I drew the illustrations. From the time I received notice that I had a publisher to the time I received the first copy of the book took about 6 months.

Middle School News:   Describe the process of how you get a book published.

Ellen:    Editing, text blocking, first revision, 2nd revision, final copy. Back cover, front cover, press releases. These are the steps that the publisher took us through. Everything was done via the internet. There was a project coordinator and they corresponded with my Mom (my project coordinator). We are also working with the publisher to get my work overseas. That would mean getting my book(s) translated into other languages such as Chinese, German, or French.

Middle School News: Where can people get or buy your book?

Ellen: My book is available in Harlan at Keast Ford, The Flower Barn,, Odds & Ends, The Fourth Generation, and the Coffee Plant. You can also purchase a copy of my book on line at www.strategicpublishinggroup.com/title/ASnowyWeek.html or through Amazon. Look for A Rainy Week to be out around the holidays.

The weather didn’t really agree with the first, second, and third hour when we went outside, when the weather was cold, windy, foggy and a lot of precipitation in the air. For fourth, fifth, and sixth hour it was breezy, sunny and very humid.

Now the students are making a new rocket for a competition against the whole grade the top ten people will launch a second time, all the 8th graders will watch and see how they worked together and used the previous information to make a better rocket.

The top three groups with the highest out of the ten will get a prize. The scheduled launch was on Monday, the 27.
