Sexual Assault

The month of April focuses on many awareness’s and sexual assault is one of the many. Sexual assault is illegal sexual contact that usually involves force upon a person without consent. In 2007 there were 248,300 sexual assaults according to the U.S. Department of Justice’s Crime Victimization Survey. Someone, somewhere, is being sexually assaulted every two minutes or every 127 seconds. Rape or sexual assault has decreased by 60% since 1993.
One in six American women have been the victim of sexual assault or attempted rape or completed rape in her lifetime (14.8% completed rape; 2.8% attempted rape). Based on those statistics two girls in our School News class will be sexually assaulted in their life. Sexual assault is one of the most under reported crimes, with as much as 60% going unreported. Males are the least likely to report a sexual assault, though they make up about 10% of all victims.
If rape is reported, there is a 50.8% chance of an arrest. If there is an arrest, there is an 80% chance of prosecution. If there is a prosecution, there’s a 58% chance of conviction. If there is a felony conviction, there is a 69% chance the convict will spend time in jail. So even in the 39% of attacks that are reported to the police, there’s only a 16.3% chance the rapist will end up in prison. Factoring in unreported rapes, about 6% of rapists will ever spend time in jail. 15 of 16 walk freely.
Approximately two of three rapes were completed by someone known to the victim. 73% of sexual assaults were perpetrated by non-stranger. 38% of rapists are a friend or acquaintance. 28% are an intimate. 7% are a relative.
Sexual assault needs to be stopped in America and everywhere. It damages a lot people and not many can come back from it. It’s very sick and gross and needs to be stopped right now.

8th Grade Memory

It’s Taylor and Nicole here reporting for the middle school news. The subject of the matter is the 8th grade memory video, the thought that is on all of our minds. What should you say? What were your favorite memories? Those are two questions that we can’t answer but what we can answer is should you do it. Yes!

Talk to all of your friends and ask them if you share any memories from middle school with them. If you don’t want to do the video with another student you can do it by yourself. These memories can be any 6th, 7th, or 8th grade memories you have. The memories can very from student related to teacher related. But, you’re on a time limit you have to sign up by this Friday. The sign up is in the FCS room next to the door.

If you still don’t feel comfortable about sharing your memories we will share ours. Taylor- “My memory is during cheerleading Melissa K, Carly N, Kayla H, Cari P, and I would leave before the game and go into the band hallway and sit in the trashcans and spin around. Nicole- “Leah and I would be in study hall and talk about some interesting things and I spy”. Now that you’ve heard our memories go out and tell yours. Don’t be square sign up! :)

Leukemia and lymphoma
Fundraiser

Hey this is Majesta Musich and Justin Rubek bringing you with a written story about the leukemia and lymphoma fundraiser(:
The middle school Builder’s Club members are collecting money by the guidance office in the morning. If you donate to the builders club, you will receive a sticky ribbon in either orange or green, and the satisfaction of helping someone with cancer. In the afternoon, all of the money will be counted, and then paper ribbons will be put up.

Some teachers are selling things such as drinks in their class, and food, like cinnamon rolls, pop, and some teachers are letting you listen to ipods or mp3s, chew gum and eat candy. If you are in eighth grade, you can buy a raffle ticket to win a pizza for lunch, with three other friends. All of this is helping people in need and researchers to hopefully find a cure(:

Thank you for reading this written story. Please donate to the cause of a cancer patient! Your donation could help save lives of people like you;)
