The Love For The Game!!

On March 26, 2011, was the AAU state volleyball tournament for the 7th and 8th grade select volleyball teams. They did a wonderful job representing the Harlan Cyclones.

AAU is one of the largest, non-profit organizations. Most of the work is volunteer. It is also the promotion of amateur sports and physical fittness. AAU stands for Ametuer Athetic Union.

The AAU tournament is for the teams who place either 1st or 2nd in a tournament that is played at the beginning of the season. The AAU tournament is separated into pool play and power pool, Depending on how you do in the first two rounds determines which final tournament you play in: bronze, silver, or gold. Our 7th grade Cyclones won their pool play. Then they won every game in power pool except for one against the Ankeny Aces. Overall, 7th grade got 5th and the 8th grade got 4th.

The AAU tournament this year was held in Ankeny, right outside of Des Moines. The 7th grade has been to the gold tournament 3 years in a row. The tournament is held in a different location every year.

This year the Cyclones had two players make the all- tournament team, one from 7th grade and one from eighth grade. Those two players are Taylor Frederick and Jess Schaben. The selection of the players that make the all tourney team are from observations throughout the day of the players’ abilities. Those two players both play as a middle hitter for the Cyclones.

The 8th grade and 7th grade both practice twice a week together. We work on transition, hitting, serving, passing, and setting. During this season, both teams have improved vigorously. It’s a team effort to help us improve. The 8th and 7th grade helps each other. It does not even seem that we are even in a practice because we just love the sport and have so much fun.

Our coaches for the 7th grade are Jenny Moser and Meg McGrath. The 8th grade coaches are Carrie Schaben and Chad Swanson.

We had a fun and very experencing season. We would like to thank our coaches for there time and patients.
