I-Band Concert
On Friday, May 20, 2011, at 7 pm, Harlan’s own 7th/8th grade band will have its 4th consecutive I-Band Concert. The whole band is looking forward to the concert. Mr. Britt, the director, has appointed two student directors to take control of the actions, props and special effects. Actions have been made to go with each song. The songs that all instruments in the band will play are: Alice’s theme, Thriller, The Blues Brothers Greatest Hits, You Raise Me Up, and True Colors. The Drumline has a song called Groove Tube, and the flags have a song called Like OMG Baby. On Monday, May 2, the band started putting actions to music. The final act will be amazing and the last time the band gets together to play before the end of school. With only one week left till the final performance, pressure is rising to get the actions done and the music memorized.
Fundraisers have been made up and have been done to get the costumes and props needed for the show. Costumes and props can still be donated to the band. With an orchestra based band setting for some of the songs and some songs set up on stage with the instrument players doing actions and playing, the band is slowly getting the concert ready for their audience on Friday, May 20.
From the 7/8 grade band to you, “Hope you have a wonderful time listening to the band if you go. We will try our hardest to make the time you spend enjoyable. Hope you come!”
Again the time of the performance is 7 pm on Friday, May 20 in the High School Auditorium. Hope you enjoy the very last performance the band has together.

May Day
May Day is a traditional public holiday and is celebrated by many cultures on May 1st. In some countries it is an international workers day or Labor Day. This is a day of political demonstrations and celebrations. This idea began in Australia in 1856.
In the northern hemisphere May Day marks the end of winter and traditionally been an occasion for populous crazy celebrations. In the United States d
uring May Day people make May Day basket. The baskets are small and are usually filled with small treats or flowers. People then take them and put them on people’s door steps. The basket giver rings the door bell and runs away. When the receiver gets the baskets tries to chase the giver. If the person is caught, a kiss is exchanged.
May Day is celebrated in many countries like Bangladesh, Turkey, China, Syria, Taiwan, India, Germany, Great Britian, Ireland, Portugal, France, Bulgaria, Finland, Sweden, Americas/U.S, and Brazil.
In Germany, the people celebrate with festivals, and a maypole. A tradition that started the in the 16th century is a decocted tree or tree trunk, that is erected May1st. They also have the crowning of the May Queen.
May Day is a fun holiday all around the world. Every year we make May Day baskets and deliver them to our friends and family. The most exciting part is trying not to get caught. It you don’t do may baskets you should make them next year because it’s a lot of fun.
